Oakland Zoo is excited to announce three new meerkat babies, called pups, to the current mob (group of meerkats). Their names are African in origin and are Ayo (joy), Rufaro (happiness), and Nandi (sweet). The pups are approaching six weeks of age and are doing well.
This is very exciting news for Oakland Zoo as it is the first successful litter of meerkat pups in over a year. Keepers have been doing a great job monitoring and keeping close tabs on the six week old pups movement and behavior. Meerkat pups are very fragile and infanticide, the killing of an infant by others in the mob, is not uncommon. However, the mob has been taking good care of the pups, so there are high hopes for this litter. Victor Alm, Zoological Manager, stated:
It has been wonderful watching the mob raise the pups. It has truly been a collective effort and all the adults are taking their turns caring for and teaching the new pups their different roles and jobs needed to be a productive meerkat.
There are now a total of eight meerkats in Oakland Zoos mob, three of which include the new pups. The adult group consists of three females and two males. Adults can weigh up to two pounds. Mealworms are among the meerkats favorite treats. Since the keepers have been very hands off with the meerkat pups and will continue to be hands off for the first few months, the sexes of the newest additions are unknown. All eight meerkats are on exhibit at Oakland Zoo and may be viewed during normal business hours, 10:00am – 4:00pm.

Newly available conclusions from a Queens College study in New York reiterate that two added factors smoking and/or asbestosis dramatically increase the risk of developing mesothelioma and other asbestos cancers following asbestos exposure. Lead author Steven B. Markowitz (MD, PhD) is a Professor of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the School of Earth & Environmental Sciences at Queens College. In the 30+-year study of a large cohort (selected population) of asbestos-exposed US insulation workers and nearly 55,000 North American male workers, Markowitz explains the study was contingent on following chosen subjects who, at the outset, had never previously been exposed to asbestos.
Over three decades, Markowitz says, We found that each [single] individual risk factor was associated with increased risk of developing lung cancer, while the combination of two risk factors further increased the risk, and the combination of all three risk factors increased the risk of developing lung cancer almost 37-fold. The three factors to which he is referring are asbestos exposure, smoking, and asbestosis (http://www.ascopost.com/ViewNews.aspx?nid=3125). (Note: Asbestosis is a respiratory ailment resulting from scarred, thickened lung tissue developing as the body attempts to repair lungs after exposure to toxic carcinogens such as asbestos or tobacco. Common symptoms are coughing and impaired breathing.)
To be exact, 2,377 North American insulators and 54,243 male workers initially having no prior contact with asbestos were followed for over 30 years after their lifestyles changed with the introduction of asbestos contact. According to Markowitz: Among nonsmokers, asbestos increased the rate of dying from lung cancer 5.2-fold, while the combination of smoking and asbestos exposure increased the death rate more than 28-fold. Asbestosis increased the risk of developing lung cancer among asbestos-exposed subjects in both smokers and nonsmokers with the death rate from lung cancer increasing 36.8-fold among asbestos-exposed smokers with asbestosis (see ascopost.com).
In asbestos-exposed insulators who kicked the smoking habit, mortality rates dropped nearly half by the 10-year mark, from 177 deaths per 10,000 to 90 deaths per 10,000. Lung cancer in insulators who stopped smoking 30 years earlier regained pink lungs (as opposed to black), similar to virgin lungs of those who never smoked. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) estimates lungs may return from black to pink as soon as 15 years after quitting smoking (http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/asbestos).

The two were leaning on the balcony rail when it gave way, and they fell eleven-and-half feet into a 10-foot embankment, which led to a creek at the end of a retaining wall. Momentarily unconscious and submerged in the creek, the men were eventually transported to Baylor Hospital by the Dallas Fire Department.
Court documents indicated Hernandez suffered soft tissue injuries, scrapes, bruises, a sprained shoulder and several bulging discs injuries and damages exceeding the original offer of zero dollars and the $ 5,000 offered at mediation. The jury ultimately agreed, awarding $ 177,606 for past medical bills totaling nearly $ 40,000, past and future physical impairment ($ 50,000 each) and past and future physical pain and suffering ($ 20,000 each).
